Mornings with Dave & Jen

Is walking just as healthy as running?
Is walking just as healthy as running?

Can you get the same health benefits from walking as you do from running?

A new study suggests so!

Thousands of walkers and runners were checked for blood pressure, blood sugar and cholesterol levels at the start of a six-year study and then checked periodically to see who developed high blood pressure, unhealthy cholesterol or diabetes.

They found that people who exercised with the same amount of energy got the same benefit.

Paul Williams, study co-author, explains, “It takes longer to walk a mile than to run a mile. But if you match them up on energy expended, they are comparable. If you do the same amount of exercise– if you expend the same number of calories– you get the same benefit.”

So if you’re unable to run because of knee or ankle issues, pick up the pace on your walks and you’ll be just as healthy!
