Now that Summer is over (and we’re spending less time outside getting tan), it’s a PERFECT time for your yearly check for melanoma (i.e. skin cancer).
Make sure your doctor checks these often overlooked areas during your next checkup (from Health.com):
Your belly button It gets as much sun as the rest of your stomach, but not usually as much sunscreen.
The back of your neck. Women especially can forget sunscreen here because their hair usually covers it.
Ears and lips. They’re vulnerable to aggressive skin cancers.
Your palms. Along with the soles of your feet, there’s a specific form of melanoma that often shows up here.
Your legs. They’re a favorite spot for melanoma to strike, perhaps because the upper thighs often don’t see sunlight EXCEPT when you’re sunbathing.
Your genitals. Just about every dermatologist has diagnosed skin cancer on the genitals at some point…it DOES happen…hopefull not to you.
Melanoma is one of the most treatable cancers so be sure to get checked out regularly (particuarly if your job requires you be outdoors for long periods of the day).
