New Roots principal optimistic about charter renewal

ITHACA — The principal of an Ithaca charter school says she doesn’t anticipate any problems with an upcoming five-year renewal.

A public hearing was held several weeks ago regarding the charter renewal for the New Roots School, where many spoke out both in favor of and against the continued operations of the school. SUNY officials will be the ones making the final decision, and are expected to reach it early next year.

Tina Nilsen-Hodges, principal of New Roots, says there’s a lot that goes into the charter renewal, but she’s confident the school will get it.

“The renewal process includes an extensive review of data, policies, and other documentation on programs and organization, academics, student performance, and fiscal responsibility,” she said. “I’m really proud of our team’s success in creating a meaningful educational experience for students that meets SUNY’s high standards of excellence.”

Nilsen-Hodges says there’s a lot of good news coming out of New Roots these days.

“In the last two years, we’ve had our highest graduation rates ever at New Roots, and we have very stable enrollment that’s allowing us to support the school in fiscally responsible way,” she said. “There’s all kinds of wonderful things happening with the young people that chose New Roots, and many of our Class of 2012 are just now graduating from college and going on to great things.”

Her comments come after other reports earlier this year that the school was cutting down on its enrollment because it had more students than it could handle.
