The two candidates for New York’s 23rd congressional district this November are giving their thoughts on the ongoing strife in Gaza and the downing of a Malaysian Airlines passenger plane over Ukraine.

Congressman Tom Reed says pro-Russian rebels need to make the investigation of the plane completely transparent.

Reed also stands with Israel in the fighting between them and Palestine in Gaza. He is calling for Hamas to negotiate for peace.

Reed’s opponent, Democrat Martha Robertson says she stands with Israel, but they must take additional steps to minimize collateral damage and civilian casualties.

She also calls on Hamas to accept the ceasefire Egypt is attempting to broker, so humanitarian aid can reach those in need.

In the end, Robertson says Israel, the United States, and Palestine must all recommit to building a durable peace.
