A southbound stretch of Interstate 81 south of Syracuse was closed overnight after a tractor-trailer carrying pesticides catches fire.

Time Warner Cable News reports that an Onondaga County emergency dispatcher says the truck caught fire around 12:15 a.m. Wednesday in the southbound lanes between exits 16 and 15 in Lafayette.

Officials say the truck was hauling solid pesticides and has burned to the ground. Firefighters and hazardous material crews remain at the scene early Wednesday morning.

The highway was closed in both directions until the northbound lanes were reopened around 4:30 a.m.

State police say the southbound lanes remain closed at 7 a.m.
