Other first-round winners on the men’s side included Americans John Isner, the 13th-seed, and Sam Querrey, the 26th-seed, as well as fifth-seed Tomas Berdych.

On the women’s side of things, second-seeded Victoria Azarenka breezed to a 6-0, 6-0 victory over 99th-ranked Dinah Pfizenmaier of Germany while fourth-seed Sara Errani charged into round 2 for the women with a 6-love, 6-love win over Olivia Rogowska in 51 minutes.
