Memorial Day Weekend is HERE and we’ll all be out and about at commemorations and celebrations with family and friends!
Here’s how to do it safely thanks to the American Red Cross, the USDAand the EPA:
Driving A record 38.4 million people on the road this year so if you are traveling, buckle up, make sure you’re well-rested, don’t speed and never drink-and-drive (and keep an eye for those who do).
Grilling Never leave a hot grill unsupervised and make sure it’s far enough away from buildings, trees and anything else that could catch fire. Keep your kids and pets away from it, too and never spray lighter fluid on coals that are already hot.
Food It’s something we often forget about during the summer…leaving food out for too long in warmer temperatures. Don’t leave food out of the refrigerator for more than two hours…any longer than that and you risk food poisoning.
Water safety Pay close attention to children when you’re around water this weekend, never swim alone and always wear life jackets if you’re boating on Cayuga Lake or anywhere in the Finger Lakes.
Sun safety. Today is Don’t Fry Day,..get it? The National Council on Skin Cancer Prevention came up with it to encourage us to be careful in the sun on Memorial Day, and all summer long. Remember to “Slip, Slop, Slap and Wrap”… meaning:
- Slip on a long-sleeved shirt to protect your arms
- Slop on plenty of sunscreen that’s SPF 15 or higher
- Slap on a hat to protect your face and neck
- Wrap on a pair of sunglasses to protect your eyes from sun damage.
Now get out there and have some fun! 🌞😎🏊♂️🍸
