What’s “Christmas Tree Syndrome”?

Have you heard of “Christmas Tree Syndrome”?

WKYC reported on a mom in Cleveland named Angela Presti who picked out her first real Christmas tree for her and her daughter.

A few hours after they got it home, Angela’s face started to swell up, her throat closed and she had to be rushed to the E.R.!

Turns out she’d gone into anaphylactic shock because of something called “Christmas Tree Syndrome” an allergic reaction to not the tree itself but the mold growing on it. usually because it got wet while sitting on the lot.

About 7% of us are at least somewhat allergic to the mold but severe reactions are very rare and Angela has completely recovered.

If you bring home a real tree this year and start to feel ill, be sure to call your doctor or seek medical attention.
