A “healthy” kitchen

Winter is cold and flu season…and this year’s been a particularly rough one.

You might be putting yourself at risk with some of these common kitchen habits from Business Insider, USDA and Live Science:

  • You only own one cutting board.  You should have at least two: one for raw meat and one for everything else.  (The meat one should be plastic, too.)
  • You wash raw meat.  This can actually increase your chances of getting sick.  When water from your faucet hits the meat, it splatters the juice all over your kitchen and can spread things like e. coli and salmonella everywhere.
  • You use the same sponge for way too long.  Replace it every two weeks.  Tossing it in the dishwasher or microwaving kills some of the bacteria, but not all of it.
  • Letting leftovers sit out too long  Remember the two-hour rule. Don’t let anything sit out for more than two hours…either put it in the fridge or throw it away.
