Sunscreen and Summer

Summer’s finally here…and you’ll need to protect your family from the sun.

You may have heard that super-high SPFs were unnecessary…but a new study disputes that.

Researchers in Colorado tested sunscreen on skiers with SPF 50 on one side of their face and SPF 100 on the other.

Turns out the SPF 50 side was 11 times more likely to end up with sun damage.

Why? First, the extra SPF does protect your skin a little better…not twice as much, but SPF 100 blocks about 99% of UV-B rays compared to 98% with SPF 50…and it’s enough to make a difference.

Also most of us don’t apply as much sunscreen as we’re supposed to and don’t reapply it often enough….with higher SPFs you’re more likely to be protected even if you don’t put enough on.

So what number is good?

In general, SPF 30 should work…but you’ve got to put it on thick and reapply it every two hours or so.
