What to do during an emergency

How prepared are you for a medical emergency?

The Today show asked ER doctors about the mistakes people make when one actually occurs…here are four takeaways:

ALWAYS call 911 first  You may panic and call someone close for advice or to let family members know…call them after you make the 911 call.

Call an ambulance  In almost all cases it’s better to call an ambulance rather than taking someone to the ER…the EMTs can work on your loved one the moment they get there rather than waiting at the ER and it’s also hard to focus on driving when your passenger is in pain or needs help.

Stay with them  You’d be surpiised how many people drop off someone and then leave. People in pain can’t always make good medical decisions or stick up for themselves so be sure to stick around until they’re in the clear.

Bring your charger  It’s very common for people to rush to the hospital, be there six to eight hours and have no way to call people because your phone’s lost its charge.

Remember…EVERY minute counts…make the most of them.
