Where to stay cool this week 🥵

Unusually high (triple digit!) temperatures are expected over the next few days…here’s a list of places you can cool off in the Finger Lakes (always call ahead):

  • Greater Ithaca Activities Center
  • Tompkins County Public Library
  • YMCA of Ithaca & Tompkins County
  • Shops at Ithaca Mall
  • Tompkins Cortland Community College
  • Southworth Library – Dryden
  • Lansing Community Library
  • Newfield Public Library
  • Ulysses Philomathic Library
  • Groton Public Library
  • Ithaca College
  • Cornell University
  • Tompkins County Office for the Aging
  • Lamont Memorial Free Library – Cortland
  • Peck Memorial Library – Cortland
  • Phillips Free Library – Cortland
  • Apalachin Public Library – Apalachin
  • Cady Library – Apalachin
  • Coburn Free Library – Apalachin
  • Marvin Park Pool – Apalachin
  • Spencer Library – Apalachin
  • Tioga Central School Indoor Pool – Apalachin
  • Waverly Free Library – Apalachin

ALWAYS call ahead first to confirm hours of operation, bring your own water and wear light, loose clothing.

You can also use the New York State Department of Health Cooling Center Finder to find one open near you.

And also be aware of the early signs of heatstroke, including:

  • Headaches
  • Dizziness
  • Muscle cramps
  • Heavy sweating or sudden lack of sweat
  • Weakness or fatigue
  • Nausea

ANY or all of these signs could lead to heat exhaustion or stroke, especially for the elderly and those with compromised immune systems. If you experience them:

  • Move to a cool, shaded area
  • Remove excess clothing
  • Cool down with cold water, ice packs or a cool shower
  • Call 911 immediately

Stay cool (and safe!) this 4th of July!
