ITHACA, N.Y. (WHCU) – The official 90-day period to appeal the new flood maps in Tompkins County is underway, as of Wednesday.

FEMA is encouraging residents, business owners, and community partners to review the updated maps to learn about flood risks and new insurance requirements. People can submit an appeal if they believe that the information to create the maps is technically or scientifically incorrect.

An appeal must include technical information, “such as hydraulic or hydrologic data, to support the claim.” You can view flood map changes here.

Contact a FEMA map specialist at 877-336-2627, or FEMA Region 2 Office at (347) 416-3792 for more information. Once the resolution of all comments and appeals or resolved, FEMA will notify the public of the effective date of final maps.  The new local maps and their effects are projected to go into effect in mid to late 2025.
