ITHACA, N.Y. (WHCU) – The future of the Ithaca Gun smokestack remains in the hands of the city, for now.

The Planning and Economic Development Committee narrowly voted to let Common Council decide on funding a preservation assessment. The assessment to determine whether or not the structure could be saved would cost the city anywhere from $7,500 to $15,000.  If Common Council votes no, the smokestack will likely be demolished by developers.

Some committee members have expressed trepidation at preserving the smokestack, citing the history of lead contamination and the current landscape of gun violence in the country, but others say it must go to vote. Alderperson Cynthia Brock says she sees the landmark in a negative light.

 

However, a survey sent out earlier this year suggests more than 90% of the county and 80% of the city are in favor of preservation.
