UPDATE 5:05 p.m. – The Cortland City Police Department has cancelled the AMBER Alert.
The Cortland City Police Department has activated the New York State AMBER Alert as police investigate a reported child abduction, according to state police.
The child, Liam Brandon Barr-Whitfield, is described as white, approximately 4 years and 9 months old with brown hair and brown eyes. He was last seen wearing camouflage pants and a gray t-shirt with lettering that read “this is what cool looks like.” He has a navy blue hooded rain jacket.
Police identified Shane Whitfield, approximately 57 years old, as a suspect. He was last seen traveling on Lincoln Avenue at around 2:50 p.m. in a 2015 gray Nissan Frontier with Florida license plate number 191YTL, possibly heading for Florida, according to state police. The alert was issued at 4:05 p.m.
“Non-custodial father forcibly abducted the child from a supervised visitation in violation of court order,” state police said. “Suspect has a lengthy history of violence. Anyone with any information on this abduction is asked to call the Cortland City Police Department at (866) N Y S-AMBER or dial 911 to provide information on a report or sighting.”
