Sheriff Ron Spike says the boat was traveling on Seneca Lake “at a fast speed when it made an abrupt turn” and capsized around 5:20 p.m. All six people aboard the boat, described as a 45-foot high-performance speed boat, were thrown into the water.

The accident happened near Himrod. Police say 65-year-old passenger Cynthia Stuck of Waterloo was pronounced dead at the scene.

Four other people suffered internal injuries and were all taken to nearby hospitals for treatment. The driver of the boat, who’s ben identified as 48-year-old Michael Battley, was not injured.

The boat was seized by the sheriff’s office as part of an investigation into the accident.
