In response to complaints, Ithaca to try scratch-off cards for parking

ITHACA — Leaders in Ithaca have come up with a response to concerns over the city’s
parking system.

On-street pay stations were installed last year, but city officials say they’ve gotten a number of complaints from senior citizens and the mobility-impaired, who say they can’t get to the stations easily to pay for parking.

The city is now floating a plan to sell one-time scratch-off cards at locations that currently distribute city trash tags.

The cards could be sold for as little as a quarter of an hour (38 cents per card), or up to
eight hours ($12 per card).

If the idea is approved, the city would test out the cards on a two-year pilot program, starting in June. The city would conduct an annual review of the scratch-off card program to see if it was a success.

The city’s Board of Public Works is expected to approve the idea at a meeting late Monday afternoon.

Mayor Svante Myrick has also said on Facebook that the city will be installing more pay stations over the coming weeks.
