CORTLANDVILLE — A pair of crashes in Cortland County early Sunday morning has left one person dead.

The Cortland County Sheriff’s Department says the first crash happened around 2:30 a.m. on the exit 12 off-ramp off Route 81 near Homer. They say the driver of the car with four people in it lost control on the ramp and hit the guard rails on either side of the ramp before stopping in the middle of the road.

Deputies say the four people had gotten out of the car when a second car driven by 29-year-old Andrew Roy of North Carolina hit theirs while it was still in the roadway. One of the people from the first car, 22-year-old Aaron Rosario of Syracuse, was hit and killed in that second crash.

The other three people, as well as the driver of the second car, were checked for injuries but weren’t taken to a hospital. The cause of the crash is still under investigation, and part of Route 81 was closed for a time Sunday after the crash.
