GENEVA, N.Y. (AP) — Authorities have released the names of the woman and man who died in an apparent murder-suicide committed last weekend on a street in an upstate New York city.

Police in Geneva say Emily Carson was shot late Sunday morning by 35-year-old Pedro Pacheco on Exchange Street as passers-by looked on. Officials say Pacheco then shot himself.

He died at the scene. Carson, a mother of three, died at Geneva General Hospital, where she worked as a nurse in the emergency department. It was her 38th birthday.

Police Chief Jeff Trickler says the shooting and suicide happened so fast there wasn’t anything witnesses could’ve done to prevent it.

Authorities say Carson and Pacheco, who lived in New York City, had an on-again, off-again relationship.
