Weekend Sports Update – Cornell women win ECAC title; IHS falls in state championship

The Cornell women’s hockey team knocked off Clarkson 1-0 Sunday to win the ECAC title.

Cassandra Poudrier scored the only goal of the game in the first period.  Lauren Slebodnick made 26 saves to earn the shutout for Cornell.

Cornell topped Harvard 6-4 Saturday in the ECAC semifinals to earn a spot in Sunday’s title game.

IHS falls to Massena in state final 

The Ithaca High Boys’ Hockey team fell one game short of a state championship, falling to Massena 4-1 Sunday in Utica.

The Little Red scored first in the championship, then gave up four unanswered goals, including an empty-net goal with less than a minute to play.

Massena out shot Ithaca 30-14 in the game.

On Saturday, IHS skated by Scarsdale 6-4 in the state semifinals.

IC women earn trip to Sweet 16 

The Ithaca College women’s basketball team is headed to the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Division Three tournament, following a 54-43 win Saturday over Haverford College.

The Bombers were led by Mary Kate Tierney, who scored 19. Jenn Escobido added 16 for Ithaca College, who upped their record to 25-4 on the season.

Their Sweet 16 opponent will be Amherst, with the site to be determined. Amherst handed Ithaca one of their four losses of the season, beating the Bombers 66-44 on November 24.

Big run catapults #15 Cornell past #2 Virginia

Cornell used a run of nine goals to upset second-ranked Virginia, 12-9, at Schoellkopf Field Saturday.

Freshman goalie Christian Knight made 15 saves and led a Big Red defense that gave up only five goals in the first half, and another four in the second.

Offensively, Dan Lintner and Connor Buczek each notched hat tricks, and Matt Donovan added two goals and three assists.

The 15th-ranked Big Red handed the Cavaliers their first loss of the season. Cornell plays Yale at home next Saturday.
