OWEGO, NY (607NewsNow) – A former dumping site in Owego is now part of the state’s superfund program.

On June 17, the DEC announced that the Sulphur Springs Road Fill Area has been added to the Registry of Inactive Hazardous Waste Disposal Sites.

Officials say groundwater and soil testing over the past two years confirmed contamination consistent with industrial degreasers. The site has been designated Class 2, which presents a “significant threat to public health or the environment.”

In October 2024, point-of-entry treatment systems (POETs) were installed at two private wells to eliminate exposure to residents.

The DEC says they’ll complete a remedial investigation to determine the nature and extent of contamination in the soil, surface water, groundwater, and any other parts of the environment that could be affected. After that, they’ll assess other potential exposure pathways and evaluate cleanup options.
