AUBURN, NY (607NewsNow) – Keep your eyes open if you’re hitting the water this weekend.

According to the Cayuga County Health Department, two harmful algal blooms (HABs) were confirmed on the northeastern section of Cayuga Lake this week.

HABs appear on the water in shades of green, blue-green, yellow, brown, or red. Avoid contact with toxic blooms, as they can have negative health effects for humans and animals.

It’s the third confirmed bloom on the lake so far this year, after the first bloom of the season was reported on April 23. It was the earliest reported bloom on record.

You can now report potential HABs directly to the DEC here. You can also submit reports to the Ithaca-based Community Science Institute.
