ITHACA, NY (607NewsNow) – Toni Morrison’s legacy lives on in Ithaca.

On February 18, the late Nobel Prize-winning author and activist Toni Morrison was honored with a historic marker from the Pomeroy Foundation.

The plaque was installed on Albany Street in front of the house Morrison lived in while pursuing her master’s degree at Cornell University. Afterwards, a celebration was held at GIAC. Professor emerita of African Studies and Comparative Literature Anne Adams said the marker is a perpetual reminder of the space that Ithaca shares with Morrison.

According to the Cornell Chronicle, the project was led by the Toni Morrison Collective, a group of faculty and librarians established in 2020.

In addition to distributing her books throughout Ithaca, the Morrison collective has held community discussions, hosted academic conferences, and sponsored films, plays, and readings.
