Homer woman attacked officers at fire scene, deputies say

HOMER, NY (607NewsNow) — A Homer woman is charged after a fire in the village.

The Cortland County Sheriff’s Office says Kyna Malchak was told by deputies Sunday to leave the fire scene on James St. for her own safety. Deputies say the 47-year-old refused and physically attacked two officers, one of whom who was bitten by Malchak’s dog.

Malchak is charged with felony counts and several misdemeanors:

Assault 2nd Degree – 2 COUNTS (FELONY)
Assault 3rd Degree (MISDEMEANOR)
Criminal Possession Weapon 4th Degree (MISDEMEANOR)
Resisting Arrest (MISDEMEANOR)
Obstructing Govt. Administration 2nd Degree (MISDEMEANOR)

Deputies say the fire appears suspicious, but they haven’t determined a cause. One firefighter was treated for a leg injury.
