ITHACA, NY (607NewsNow) — Ithaca is moving ahead on alternative responders, which was a recommendation several years ago in the Reimagining Public Safety initiative between the city of Ithaca and Tompkins County.

Mayor Robert Cantelmo tells 607 News Now the Common Council has OK’d the creation of ROOTS, or Responders Offering Outreach, Trust, and Support.

Cantelmo says the program will start small.

With a goal of three responders to start the program, the geographic focus will initially be limited.

Mayor Cantelmo says once the responders will report to the city manager.
