HECTOR, NY (607NewsNow) – A series of prescribed burns is underway in the area.

Federal officials say the fires began this week in Seneca and Schuyler County.

The burns, which help reduce overgrown vegetation and potential wildfires, are occurring in the Finger Lakes National Forest across approximately 1,100 acres in the Hector Ranger District. The fires will continue into April and the spring as weather conditions allow.

The designated work areas may be closed for several days for public safety. Warning signs will be posted along roads near all prescribed fire areas before and during burns.

Residents may see and smell smoke during the process. Drivers are encouraged to slow down and turn on their headlights when encountering smoke on the road. Check air quality here.

In related news, the NYS DEC annual spring burn ban remains in effect through May 14.
