DRYDEN, NY (607NewsNow) – Officials are urging some Dryden residents to keep their pets indoors.

The Ithaca Voice reports investigators found 40 opened cans of wet cat food they believe were intentionally laced with rat poison on June 26.

Officer Lee Consolo of Tompkins County Animal Control says symptoms may take three to seven days to show up. They include lethargy, vomiting, bloody stool, lack of appetite, and ingestion can lead to death.

One dog has already been rushed to Cornell for treatment. According to Animal Control, they removed the contaminated food but warned that some may still be in the area. The investigation is ongoing, and it’s not currently known if any other animals were affected.

Anyone who believes their pet has ingested the contaminated food or a rat/mouse that may have ingested the food should seek immediate veterinary care and contact Tompkins County Animal Control at (607) 592-6773.
