ITHACA, NY (CortacaToday) – A suspended international Cornell grad student could learn his fate soon.
On Monday, UK native Momodou Taal reportedly was told by school officials his visa would be terminated after his second suspension related to pro-Palestinian demonstrations on campus. Taal was part of a large group that interrupted a career fair last week in Statler Hall and organized the encampment on the Arts Quad in the spring.
Taal, who was also issued a no-trespass order, says the university is doing this to ‘shift the focus away from their complicity in genocide.’ He was referred to a senior immigration advisor.
After his initial appeal was rejected, the pro-Palestinian activist reportedly has until 5 p.m. on Friday, September 27, 2024, to submit his second request to the provost. Over 100 students and staff gathered to support Taal at Day Hall on Wednesday, September 25, 2024, calling on the administration to reverse its decision.
The Editorial Board at the Cornell Daily Sun, who first reported the story, have thrown their support behind Taal, claiming that his due process has been denied. Taal, who feels he has been unfairly targeted, has sought to rally his own allies, and his story has also been picked up nationally.
According to Rolling Stone, Taal has retained the services of an immigration lawyer.
