Tompkins County opens registration for short-term rentals

ITHACA, NY (607NewsNow) — Registration is open for short-term rentals (STR) in Tompkins County.

Under a law that passed earlier this year, owners and operators of STRs must register them with the county by Feb. 28. The registration fee for a certificate of authority is $125 for each rental unit, which is valid for two years.

According to county officials, “the updated law requires that all STR units must meet the following health and safety requirements:

Finally, the law requires that all STR units must be insured for a minimum of $300,000 in coverage for third-party claims of property damage or bodily injury that arise out of the rental of the unit. Your booking service may provide liability insurance coverage.

STR units must have a conspicuously posted evacuation diagram that illustrates all means of egress from the unit.

STR units must have a working fire extinguisher.

STR units must provide a conspicuously posted list of emergency phone numbers for police, fire, and poison control. In Tompkins County, these phone numbers are:
