Dante’s had his first two teeth for about a month now, and frankly it all came in a flash. It seems one day there was just a sharp little edge poking through and I was freaking out with joy, and then suddenly there were two prominent little chompers sticking through. That. Fast. But now I find myself angling below him while he’s sitting in the high chair, trying to get him to laugh (which is not difficult by the way) so that I can look up under his top lip to see if the top two are starting to cut through at all.
Though I’m looking ahead to those next teeth popping through for Dante, and him being able to bite off more than he can chew (quite literally), I’m trying NOT to think too far ahead to when he’s old enough to be losing his teeth.
I think back to losing my first tooth… I was in first grade… and I recall losing it while eating chocolate pie, yes chocolate PUDDING pie. How could I lose a tooth on something so soft and fluffy? Well the best I can recall I was totally freaked out by the prospect of this bone falling out of my mouth, so I let it hang on til it was dangling. It was just a matter of time. What became of that tooth…or any of my teeth for matter? I have not a clue. I’m sure my mom saved them, but then I’m sure at some point I decided I was responsible enough to take over ownership of my identifying artifacts, like my birth certificate – which, luckily I still know where that is.
Perhaps I should consider this…
“Moms have been known to partake in some pretty wacky behaviors, but now they’re making jewelry out of their children’s baby teeth. Yes, parents are trying to preserve their children’s childhoods in the form of a gold or silver coated tooth. Parents who are too freaked out to wear an actual tooth around their neck can get molds of their kids’ teeth in silver or gold instead. One Etsy store owner who makes the jewelry says most parents choose to get a mold of their kids’ tooth, and that she’s had about 100 orders so far. BabyCenter.com’s global editor says, “Moms are always on the look-out for unique and personal mementos to remember the key milestones in their child’s life. Losing a tooth is a pivotal moment in a child’s development and symbolic of crossing the threshold from baby to big kid. It’s not too surprising that parents want to preserve the teeth in some form.”(Yahoo)”
