As parents, we want our kids to be happy. But kids can experience mental health struggles, too.
‘Healthshots’ says if you notice signs of mental health issues in your child, like isolation, anxiety, irritability, difficulty expressing feelings or a lack of concentration, asking these questions can foster a positive environment for an open conversation about mental health in your home:
- “What has been stressing you out lately?” Give your child time to respond.
- “Are you finding academics difficult?” Acknowledge that they might feel stressed over demands to perform well in school.
- “Do you feel like you have too much to handle?” Share examples of when you feel overwhelmed.
- “Who do you miss the most right now?” If you’ve lost a member of your family, talk to your child about bereavement.
- “How can I help you?” ‘Healthshots’ writes “Don’t take their rudeness or harsh communication at face value. Try to be patient and listen to them when they express that they don’t want to be scolded or judged or lectured.”
