Smiley Faces are Now Sarcastic

[eye roll]

Please note that the smiley face emoji no longer means what you think it means.

The big yellow grin’s meaning has changed thanks to Gen Z, and it is now only meant to be used sarcastically.

According to The Guardian, “Nothing says ‘I hate you’ more than a smiley face emoji… It’s a tool of passive aggression and dismissiveness. A smiley face emoji at the end of a message is a patronizing pat on the head from somebody who wishes you nothing but ill fortune.”
