As Lifehacker notes, smartphone addiction is a real thing.
If you’re spending three hours a day on your phone, that adds up to a full day every week of your life. Conversely, you may also have someone in your life, either at work or in your personal life, that just can’t seem to look you in the eye and talk without glancing at their phone. Well, there are things you can do to resolve this problem.
First, is the most direct approach–simply ask them why they’re distracted. If it’s something important, then at least you’ll know. “Posing a direct question does the person a favor by pulling him back while sending a clear message,” Tech Crunch’s Nir Eyal writes.
If that doesn’t work, push it a little farther with a question like, “Do you need to finish that now or can we talk?” If the person is a close friend, another option is to impose a mutual “no phones” rule when you get together.
If they can’t agree to that, or are simply unable to, they may be truly addicted and beyond your help. At that point, you may need to move your relationship with them to email and text only.
