A recent study found that popular TikTok videos featuring teenagers’ personal skincare routines often include products with a high risk of skin irritation and allergic reaction.
Researchers analyzed 100 videos from 82 creators, where the girls’ regimens featured an average of 6 products costing $168.
The top-viewed videos contained an average of 11 potentially irritating active ingredients, with some having as many as 21.
The most common ingredients were alpha-hydroxy acids and added fragrances, which can cause irritation.
Only 26% of the regimens included sunscreen.
Researchers argued these videos encourage young girls to pursue “unattainable ideals of physical perfection.”
